Begin researching the location in which you plan to teach. Search for possible field trip ideas useful for the different areas of social studies (i.e., history, economics, current events, international and global education, geography). Field trips for young children should include both transported and walking trips.

Design a blueprint of your classroom library using graph paper or a word processing program on a computer. Include specific features such as a sitting area for read aloud and independent student reading, book shelves, and displays. Compile a list of books appropriate for the age level you wish to teach. Books for young children should include nursery rhymes, fairy tales, big books, poetry, and content area books.

Make a 10-12 page All About Me book as a way to introduce yourself to the students you will be teaching. Tell about yourself, your family, your hobbies, interests, pets, etc. Include illustrations using drawings, photographs, or computer graphics.
