1. Go to Verizon's SuperPages at http://www.superpages.com. Search for businesses using a regional term in its name, such as "Hoosier," "Acadian," "Bluegrass," "Delta," "Dixie," or "Yankee." Type that term in the Business Name box and for each state, tally up how many businesses specifically incorporate that term in their name. Print out the chart and map below to record your findings and to create a choropleth (shaded) map of your results. WARNING: Some terms will produce a lot of results, so avoid using directional names such as "Southwest" or "Eastern" or a similarly vague descriptor.
a. Does the spatial distribution of the term reflect Meinig's description of core, domain and sphere (p. 576)?
b. Does the map match your own perceptions of the region described by the term?
c. What type of spatial interaction or diffusion process would explain the use of the term in businesses far from its cultural origins?
