Membership of European Union

The world's most advanced regional organization is the European Union. It has expanded from the 8 original countries that created the European Community in 1967 to 15 countries today. Thirteen others await admission. The EU's focus is primarily economic, but it is also involved in a variety of political, social, and environmental issues and reflects a greater lever of integration than can be found in any other region.
