An Introduction to Business Ethics
Joseph R DesJardins, College of St. Benedict

Why Study Ethics

Chapter Overview

Chapter 1, “Why Study Ethics,” responds to the reasons business students frequently offer for not needing a formal course in business ethics. It stresses the idea that the philosophical study of ethics will help business managers answer ethical questions of right and wrong that arise in everyday business situations deliberately and conscientiously. It explores the difference between ethos, the beliefs and customs a culture may follow, with the reasoned analysis of those customs and a reasoned defense of how we must live that philosophical ethics provides.

Finally, the chapter points out the importance of addressing the important moral questions of how individuals must live their lives and how we ought to live together.
