The Meaning and Value of Work
Chapter OverviewChapter four provides an extensive examination of a variety of theories about the nature of work and, in light of those theories, explores the meaning and value work has for human beings. The chapter describes and analyzes the conventional model of work in both its classical and hedonistic interpretations and treats as well the human fulfillment and liberal models. These models allow us to take a closer look at the nature of business in order to better understand the ethical obligations employers and employees have toward each other, and they also provide an insight into the implications the nature and value of work have for what the citizens of a democratic society can expect both of private business and government regulation of the workplace.
