Revision Changes

  • Chapter 14 now provides the tools for planning and delivering the most common types of on-the-job presentations, including reports, briefings, orientations, training, and proposals. In addition, the chapter offers guidelines for speaking on special occasions, including introducing another speaker, presenting and accepting awards, giving toasts, and welcoming guests.
  • The text has been streamlined to present ideas more concisely without sacrificing content. Chapter 4 emphasizes listening skills in a briefer, clearer manner; guidelines for building credibility are now presented earlier (in Chapter 10) so students can apply them at the beginning of planning a presentation; and all methods for organizing a presentation are now all covered in one chapter (11).
  • Improved pedagogy includes new cognitive and behavioral learning objectives at the beginning of each chapter, new "Career Tip" sidebars with practical advice that will help students communicate more effectively on the job, new "On the Web" sidebars with links to websites that support and expand ideas from the text, and updated lists of recommended readings in each chapter.
  • New and updated material throughout the text expands coverage of topics such as the cost of poor communication in the workplace, ethical challenges in everyday communication, the dangers of using email carelessly, constructive feedback, and more.
  • A new "Quick Guide for Developing a Presentation" (a two-sided laminated card packaged with the text) offers a handy step-by-step guide for planning the most common types of business and professional communication.
