About the Authors



Judy Pearson is Professor of Communication, Director of the Doctoral Program, and Associate Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at North Dakota State University. She earned her doctorate at Indiana University; taught and administered at Indiana, Bradley, Iowa State, Michigan State, Ohio, and Virginia Tech; and has published 49 research articles and 24 books (including all editions). She has presented over 250 convention papers and chaired, or served on, over one hundred thesis and dissertation committees. She has appeared on "CBS This Morning," the "Jenny Jones Show," the "Sally Jesse Raphael" program, and "Geraldo," to name a few television appearances as well as having her research discussed in multiple magazines and newspapers including USA Today, Newsweek, and TV Guide.

Dr. Pearson has also been highly active in professional associations. She served as President of the Central States Communication Association, the Secretary-General and President of the World Communication Association, and Chair of the Educational Policies Board of the National Communication Association. She is currently First Vice President of the National Communication Association.

Paul Nelson is Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication at North Dakota State University. He earned his B.S, B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. He was Basic Course Director and Director of the Honors College at the University of Missouri, Chair of the Communication Department at Iowa State University, and Dean of the College of Communication at Ohio University. Feted as an Outstanding Young Professor by the Central States Communication Association, he also won a university-wide teaching award from the University of Missouri and the University Professor Award from Ohio University. In addition to articles in professional journals, edited books, and chapters, he has co-authored eight earlier editions of An Introduction to Human Communication: Understanding and Sharing and seven editions of Confidence in Public Speaking.

Scott Titsworth is currently an Assistant Professor and Basic Course Coordinator at Minnesota State University Moorhead. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska where he served as the Assistant and Associate Basic Course Director. Scott's research interests include instructional communication and communication education. He has published articles in Communication Education, Communication Studies, Argumentation and Advocacy, and the Basic Communication Course Annual as well as numerous pedagogical publications. He received the Central States Communication Association Outstanding GTA of the Year award in 1999 and was elected to become editor of the Basic Communication Course Annual in 2002.

Lynn Harter is an Assistant Professor at Minnesota State University Moorhead. Lynn received her Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska where she directed a large, multi-section Business and Professional Communication course. Lynn conducts research in organizational communication and health communication. She has published articles in Health Communication, Communication Studies, Southern Communication Journal, and Journal of Applied Communication Research as well as several pedagogy articles. Lynn is recognized as an award-winning teacher (Teacher of the Year at Truman State University, 1996 and GTA of the Year in the College of Arts and Sciences, University of Nebraska, 1998) and currently serves as the faculty coordinator of service learning at MSUM.
