Biology Laboratory Manual, 6/e
Darrell S. Vodopich, Baylor University
Randy Moore, University of Minnesota--Minneapolis

Preface

Biology Laboratory Manual and this accompanying Resource Guide for Laboratory Preparation provide laboratory activities appropriate for large as well as small classes. We have avoided exotic and complicated experiments–most of these exercises require only readily available materials. We also noted in the introduction to each chapter some appropriate points of emphasis and discussion. We feel that each exercise has one or two central themes which can be greatly enhanced by verbal introductions and additional discussion time.
In this sixth edition of the Instructor's Manual we have revised all of the preparation procedures and added some new features. This manual includes a complete set of recipes and formulae needed to prepare all solutions and chemicals. We have also included catalog numbers needed to order supplies. Many biological supply companies offer the needed materials. However, Ward's Biology has cooperated to provide supply information and ordering information. All of the catalog numbers listed are from Ward's Natural Science, Inc. unless otherwise indicated. Ward's offers its catalogs in print or CD-ROM format.

This instructor's manual specifically provides:
1. an introduction of important safety information.
2. statements about the rationale behind each lab exercise.
3. a comprehensive list of necessary materials.
4. suggested catalog numbers for ordering supplies from Ward's Natural Science.
5. methods to prepare chemicals and solutions.
6. comments on the experimental procedures and student activities. Of course, a trial run always increases efficiency.
7. a complete list of the questions posed in the lab manual and the answers.
8. a concise list of the lab activities and a vocabulary list.
9. a master list of supplies.

We encourage instructors to have the students work in groups of three or four, as time and facilities permit.
