The last stop of Sara’s Italian journey is Trieste, in Friuli–Venezia Giulia, the region that borders Austria, Slovenia and Croatia. Sara is in Trieste to visit her friend Antonella, but she also wants to go visit Redipuglia, the cemetery where 100,000 soldiers who died in the area during World War I are buried. Lots of memories of the war resound in these places, both in Friuli’s monuments and in Friuli’s literature. Italo Svevo, Giuseppe Ungaretti, and Umberto Saba, three of the most important Italian writers of the early twentieth century, were either from Friuli or lived in this region and all wrote about the area. Antonella tells Sara about them, and Sara realizes how important the literature is to understanding Italy’s culture, history, and memories.
