Paris is famous for its small, specific, intimate museums. The 4th arrondissement, known as the Marais (marsh), is home to several, among them the Musée Carnavalet, which treats the history of Paris, the Musée Picasso, and even a Musée de la Serrure (Lock)! The Marais was a swamp during the Middle Ages. Now, the Marais is considered the Soho of Paris and is filled with antique stores, galleries, and artisan shops. The place des Vosges is the oldest square in Paris. Built by Henri IV in the sixteenth century, it now shelters many restaurants and shops under its rose and white arches. The Académie française was originally founded in the Marais in 1630 before moving to the Institut de France. The place de la Bastille, where the French Revolution began, is one of the latest hotspots of Paris. Its vibrant nightlife centers around the cinemas, nightclubs, and restaurants that ring the square, as well as the Opéra Bastille. Designed with a transparent façade, the Opera has produced many ground-breaking cultural events since its inauguration in 1989.
