As you learned in your textbook, the French, like the Americans, do their shopping in small boutiques, department stores, and large stores similar to Walmart. In the 18th century, the precursors to malls (grandes surfaces) were born as small, covered streets of stores called galeries marchandes. The Galerie Vivienne, found in the second arrondissement, is one of the most famous. The 19th century saw the development of large, elegant department stores like the famous Galeries Lafayette in Paris. In the 1960s, the supermarché was expanded to the hypermarché … a huge, mall-like store where you can buy anything from household items to food to clothing.

The expensive fashions of Saint Laurent and Dior are copied and mass-produced by large stores such as Monoprix and Les 3 Suisses … Camille may well have bought her dress there for much less money than it would cost off the runway. Whether haute couture or prêt-à-porter (ready to wear), the world regards French fashion as synonymous with elegance and innovation. Two well-known French magazines catering to fashion, Elle and Marie-Claire, are found on newsstands everywhere as well as on the web. Their pages have contributed to the creation of the French fashion legend.
