A. Teeth

     Many schools have made financial arrangements with soft drink companies to install soda machines in the schools. School administrators say this arrangement provides much-needed money, but some parents object to the implicit encouragement their children are given to drink sodas. Some children drink six to eight cans a day, parent groups have determined.
     What is the situation in your community? Has the local dental association or the American Dental Association taken a position on the situation?

B. Tracking

     Ask members of your congressional delegation about a bill one of them has introduced in this session. Track its progress during the semester, and at specific intervals write about it. You might want to select a controversial piece of legislation so that you can obtain comments about it from constituents and officials.

     Much has been made of the diet of Americans—that it is so rich in unhealthy foods that growing numbers of people are obese and that their diets lead to ill health and debilitating illnesses.
     The result has been some effort by fast-food chains to change their menues. Check local outlets to see whether this is true, and look at what people are actually eating.
     Would this kind of reporting be an invasion of diners' privacy? Check to find out before undertaking this assignment.
