Use the globalEDGE™ site
to complete the following exercises:
1. Just as the worldwide export of manufactured products
and commercial services varies across regions
of the world, so does the difference between nonfinancial
and financial transnational corporations
(TNCs). The World Investment Report provides electronic
access to comprehensive statistics on the top
financial TNCs worldwide. So you can compare the top
10 nonfinancial TNCs from the previous chapter with
the current exercise, locate the list of the 50 largest
financial TNCs. Which countries are represented in the
top 10 on each list (nonfinancial and financial TNCs)?
Is there any difference in the countries represented in
the two rankings? Which three TNCs score highest on
this survey’s Internationalization Index (II)? How does
this compare to the top three nonfinancial institutions?
What is the difference between this survey’s II and the
previous chapter’s ranking based on the TNI? Why
would the United Nations use two different methods to
measure internationalization?
2. Your company is considering opening a new factory
in Latin America. As such, the strategic management
division is in the process of evaluating the specific
locations for such an operation. The pool of candidate
countries has been narrowed to Argentina,
Mexico, and Brazil. By using the country fact sheets
available through a resource provided by the United
Nations at the globalEDGE Web site, prepare a short
report comparing the foreign direct investment (FDI)
environment and other relevant regulations in these
three countries.
