2. We often hear about globalization's promise to break down barriers that separate peoples, ideas, and goods around the world. Yet, mounting concerns (whether real or not) over threats such as terrorism or an epidemic drive states to further tighten their control over their borders. Such controls often have devastating effects on communities caught in either side of border conflicts.

Visit http://www.csl.sri.com/users/mwfong/Commentary/Underground_War/ to read a journalist's account of border conflicts between Palestinians and Isrealis. Although this cartoon was originally published by The New York Times Magazine in 2003, the piece became relevant again during the 2008-2009 Israeli military campaign in Gaza.

What aspects of state population control and enforcement are featured in Sacco's account of the Gaza conflict?
What are some of the strategies that civilians use to outsmart the military technologies of the Isreali state?
