Sara is finally in Rome, the capital of Italy. Today is Sunday and she is avoiding the crowds in Saint Peter’s Basilica and at the Vatican Museums. She decides instead to go to visit the monument to the Unknown Soldier and to Vittorio Emanuele II, the king of the Italian Unification (1861) in Piazza Venezia. The monument also hosts the Museum of the History of the Risorgimento, which is finally open to the public after a lengthy restoration. From its balconies there are breathtaking views of the Colosseum, Palatin and Capitol Hills and of the Roman Forum. Her cousin Giovanni tells her about the monument and how the area was used by Mussolini during the Fascist dictatorship.
