After completing this chapter, you should be able to
1.
Define and apply the concepts of fluid pressure and buoyant force to the solution of physical problems similar to examples in the text.
2.
Write and illustrate with drawings your understanding of the four basic principles of fluid pressure as summarized in Section 15.3.
3.
Define absolute pressure, gauge pressure, and atmospheric pressure and demonstrate by examples your understanding of the relationships between these terms.
4.
Write and apply formulas for calculating the mechanical advantage of a hydraulic press in terms of input and output forces or areas.
5.
Define the rate of flow of a fluid and solve problems that relate the rate of flow to the velocity and cross-sectional area.
6.
Write Bernoulli's equation in its general form and describe the equation as it would apply to (a) a fluid at rest, (b) fluid flow at constant pressure, and (c) flow through a horizontal pipe.
7.
Apply Bernoulli's equation to the solution of problems involving absolute pressure P, density r, fluid elevation h, and fluid velocity v.
