After completing this chapter, you should be able to
1.
Determine the direction of the magnetic force on a current-carrying conductor in a known B field.
2.
Write and apply equations for calculating the magnetic torque on a coil or a solenoid of known area, number of turns, and current when located in a magnetic field of known flux density.
3.
Explain with drawings the function of each part of a laboratory galvanometer; describe how it may be converted to an ammeter and to a voltmeter.
4.
Calculate the multiplier resistance necessary to increase the range of a dc voltmeter that contains a galvanometer of fixed sensitivity.
5.
Calculate the shunt resistance necessary to increase the range of a galvanometer or ammeter of constant sensitivity.

Explain the operation of a simple dc motor, discussing the function of each of its parts, with particular emphasis on the split-ring commutator.
