Chapter 26, Nineteenth-Century Empires, explores the effect of major European economic, cultural, and political developments on imperial practices and attitudes, and the profound impact of imperialism on Europe itself. For example, new scholarship on gender and popular culture is used to show how empire increasingly touched the lives of everyday Europeans. The chapter argues that Empire did not happen "out there," but at the center of nineteenth-century European society and culture.
Five new Global Moments essays highlight significant occasions when Europeans encountered other world civilizations to suggest the broader context within which western history unfolded. For example, in chapter 7, Three Empires and an Elephant discusses relations and diplomatic missions among the Franks, the Byzantines, and the Abbasid caliphate.
Chapter-opening timelines offer students a visual aid to understand simultaneous developments and important dates.
Chapter-opening outlines give students a sense of what's to come in each chapter, and provide a structure for taking notes on the chapter.
Primary Source Investigator, or PSI, is a cd-rom that shows students how to work like beginning historians. It provides over 300 sources and a program that walks students through how to write a paper using those sources as evidence. A copy of PSI accompanies this book.
