In Chapter 10 students have reviewed designing and laying out a scholastic publication. In this activity students will complete a crossword puzzle, using words and concepts from the unit. Lesson Description
Students will review newspaper design and layout by completing a crossword puzzle. For directions, they can press the Instructions button in the lower-left corner. If they need a hint, they can press the Word List button. After finishing the puzzle, they can press the Check button to see how well they performed. Instructional Objectives

- deck: one level of a headline
- folio: a page number; often includes the name and section of the paper
- pica: a unit of measurement in graphic design
- leading: the white space inserted between lines, normally set at an additional two points
- baseline: the imaginary line on which type rests
- bleed: the running of color or a photo or other graphic through the external margin and off a page
- flag: copy, often combined with a graphic, that states the name of the newspaper in large bold letters across the front page; includes volume and issue numbers, publication date, and city and state where the paper is published
- gutter: white space that separates columns and facing pages
- justified: type that aligns, or is set even, on both sides of a column
- tombstoning: the placing of two headlines side by side on a page or spread
