Chapter Eight examines the three-dimensional art form of sculpture from variety of vantage points: in terms of broad conceptual definition; in respect to the formal considerations of shape, surface quality, and space; relative to functions and methods of creation, from additive (construction, assemblage)and subtractive (carving) to casting (lost-wax method). The chapter concludes with a focus on "earthworks," a major new area of sculpture in which artists create works, often huge in scale, from the earth and natural environment itself. |
