The Prefrontal Cortex and the Higher-Order Regulation of Behavior

Chapter Overview

We turn now to a discussion of the higher-order regulation of behavior mediated by the prefrontal cortex, cortex lying anterior to motor cortex and premotor cortex. This is not our first encounter with the functioning of this region of the brain; our discussion of every domain of functioning eventually led us to a consideration of the role of prefrontal cortex. To paraphrase the Roman proverb: All roads—all quests to understand the neural basis of specific domains of behavior—lead to prefrontal cortex.
