The Alamo

Remember the Alamo! This world-famous landmark represents the last stand of 200 brave soldiers fighting for Texas' independence in 1836. You can read the names of the soldiers who fought at the Alamo and see that men from all over the world died there. Among the most well-known was Davy Crockett, who after the U.S. election of Martin Van Buren, famously said, “You may all go to hell, and I will go to Texas.”

San Jacinto

Here you can see the place where Texas won its independence, the site where General Sam Houston led the Texas forces in a surprise attack against Santa Anna and defeated the Mexican army in fewer than 20 minutes. Many legends swirl around San Jacinto, including the legend of the Yellow Rose of Texas, a woman who was supposedly in bed with Santa Anna at the time of the attack, and the reason the Mexican army was so unprepared.

San Felipe

Located in San Felipe, Texas, this site is the location of the place where Stephen F. Austin established the first colony of Anglo-American settlers in Texas. This location was also the first capital of Texas after it gained its independence.

Palmito Ranch

News traveled slowly during the late 1800s, so the very last battle of the Civil War was fought in South Texas more than a month AFTER Gen. Robert E. Lee had surrendered to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox. The Civil War was still raging in Texas, and you can see the site where the Confederacy won its last battle, despite having already lost the war.
