  • Galaxies have a variety of shapes, but three types dominate:
    • Spiral
    • Elliptical
    • Irregular
  • Many galaxies have a massive black hole at their center.
  • All but the nearest galaxies are receding from us and show a redshift in their light.
  • The farther a galaxy is from us, the faster it recedes (Hubble law).
  • Galaxies occur in groups called galaxy clusters.
