BE ALERT FOR: Link Between Poverty and Environmental Degradation

Since there is now a recognized link between poverty and environmental degradation, the economic status of the different peoples of the world has become an important environmental topic. Unfortunately, a proliferation of terms has been used in this economic classification, and many of them overlap in meaning. For example, the terms South (southern hemisphere), have-nots, Third World, nonindustrialized, and less-developed are all applied to the world's poorer countries. A similar situation exists with respect to richer countries.
