The Youth Criminal Justice Act directs police officers to consider diversion programs for young persons. Section 6(1) of the Youth Criminal Justice Act states that police officers shall consider extrajudicial measures instead of proceeding with a charge, when appropriate. The officer can warn, caution, or refer the young person to an agency to deal with the specific behaviour. Look at the Youth Criminal Justice Act section and comment on whether you think officers should be subject to this legislative directive.
