What's New

  • More Argument: The Sixth Edition offers a stronger foundation in the classics along with the contemporary coverage of visual elements that today's students need. The discussion of Aristotelian and Toulmin models of argument is expanded to give students a better grounding in the essence of argument while Chapter 4 has greater coverage of the visual arguments — such as advertising and political cartoons — that they encounter every day.
  • More Readings: Fifty of the seventy readings in this edition are new. The selections are divided into fourteen specific topics to illustrate several approaches to and sides of every issue. The readings are supplemented by a list of Web sites related to the chapter's topic.
  • Evaluating and Documenting Online Information: Section III on research now emphasizes online databases and the Internet rather than paper indexes. It covers evaluating Internet sources, documenting those sources, and using a computer for note taking and writing.
  • PowerSite: McGraw-Hill's PowerSite is an Internet-based resource that provides access to a wealth of journal articles, news reports, and much more. These additional sources supplement Read, Reason, Write by offering new topics for discussion and new of points-of-view on issues included in the text. All the content within PowerSite has been refereed by content experts and educational professionals -- ensuring that you and your students receive the most pertinent and topical information for your course.
