Key Terms

addition property of equality  If a = b, then a + c = b + c.
complementary  Two angles with a sum of 90 degrees.
conditional equation  An equation that has at least one real solution but is not an identity.
division property of equality  If a = b, then a/c = b/c, c ≠ 0.
equivalent equations  Equations that have the same solution.
formula  An equation involving two or more variables.
graph of an equation  An illustration that shows all ordered pairs that satisfy the equation.
identity  An equation that is satisfied by every real number for which both sides are defined.
inconsistent equation  An equation that has no solution.
literal equation  A formula.
multiplication property of equality  If a = b, then ac = bc.
rate  A comparison of numbers that have different or unlike units of measure.
subtraction property of equality  If a = b, then a - c = b - c.
supplementary  Two angles with a sum of 180 degrees.
