Linear Equations in Two Variables and Their Graphs

Key Terms

coordinate plane  A plane with a rectangular coordinate system.
dependent variable  In y = 3x + 4, the value of y is dependent on the value of x.
domain  The set of all the first elements of the ordered pairs in a relation.
f-notation  A notation where f(x) is used as the dependent variable of a function.
function  A set of ordered pairs of real numbers in which no two have the same first and different second coordinates.
independent variable  In y = 3x + 4, x is the independent variable.
linear equation in two variables  An equation of the form Ax + By = C where A and B are not both zero.
linear function  A function of the form y = mx + b whose graph is a straight line.
ordered pair  A pair of numbers that represents a point in coordinate geometry. The first number of an ordered pair represents the x-coordinate of a point in the coordinate plane. The second number of an ordered pair represents the y-coordinate of a point in the coordinate plane.
origin  The point of intersection of the x- and y-axis.
point-slope form  The form y - y1 = m(x - x1.
range  The set of second coordinates of a relation or function.
slope  A measure of the steepness of a line; The ratio of the vertical change to the horizontal change between two points on a line.
slope-intercept form  The form y = mx +b.
standard form  The form Ax + By = C where A and B are not both zero.
x-coordinate  The first number in an ordered pair.
x-intercept  A point at which a graph crosses the horizontal axis.
y is a function of x  The value of y is determined by x.
y-coordinate  The second number in an ordered pair.
y-intercept  A point at which a graph crosses the vertical axis.
