Polynomials and Exponents

Chapter 5 - Polynomials and Exponents

A thorough study of polynomials begins with a definition, evaluation of values of polynomials with and without function notation, and addition and subtraction of polynomials. The multiplication of monomials with the Product Rule is then reviewed, leading into a discussion of multiplying polynomials. The method for finding the opposite of a polynomial is explained. The use of the FOIL method for quickly multiplying binomials is then covered. You will be taught the rules for special products such as the square of a binomial and the product of a sum and difference, and then given some practice in finding powers of binomials higher than 2. Division of polynomials is then covered, beginning with the division of monomials using the Quotient Rule, and progressing through division of a polynomial by a monomial, and then division of a polynomial by a binomial. This is followed by a discussion of positive integral exponents, including the Product and Quotient Rules for exponents, raising exponential expressions to higher powers, and raising products and quotients to powers. Then negative integral exponents and general rules for integral exponents are discussed, moving on to a discussion of how to convert to and from scientific notation, and how to do computations with scientific notation.
