Thinking about Race, Ethnicity, and Culture

Throughout this program, you will be given opportunities to enter your thoughts. These opportunities--called Journal Reflections--will permit you to record your reactions to what you have read, your ideas, notes, questions, and concerns.

Above all, be honest in your reactions. If you save these entries and return to them later, you may be surprised at the changes they record over the course of the term.

1

Were race and ethnicity discussed in your family? In what ways?
2

In what ways has your race or ethnicity affected your schooling?
3

In what ways has your race or ethnicity affected your social life?
4

If you are a member of a majority group, imagine yourself as a member of a minority group. In what ways would your childhood and adolescence have been different? If you are a member of a minority group, perform this exercise in reverse.
5

Are you proud of your ethnicity? Why? What traces of ethnicity do you show?
6

What are some cultural differences between you and members of other races or ethnicities?
7

How many 'cultures' can you identify among your fellow students? Among your friends?
8

Have you taken steps to learn more about persons of another race, ethnicity, or culture? What steps might you take in the future?
