Socioemotional Development in Middle and Late Childhood

Essay Quiz

1

One of your best friends has given you the great news that she is planning to remarry after having been divorced for 2 years. Her major concern, though, is the effect this will have on her 12-year-old daughter. Your friend's fiancé has a daughter about the same age, but she is very different from your friend’s daughter. Your friend's fiancé also has a 10-year-old son. Your friend has a secondary concern about the fact that both she and her fiancé have full-time jobs that neither can afford to quit, which means the children will be left home alone for several hours after school. What advice would you give her about providing the best possible environment for the children's safety and most risk-free development?

You have decided to open a day care center for elementary schoolchildren to provide an optimum environment for them between the hours that school lets out and the time their parents finish working. You've already talked to some of the parents and, while they may not tell you their child has problems, each has been open about some of the other children's problems, including low self-esteem, difficulties establishing friendships, and even bullying. The parents have also asked if you would be willing to help their children (not to mention the others!) develop in a morally appropriate manner, but they come from different religious perspectives, so they want to keep religion out of the picture in your center. Further, it appears that all five "peer statuses" (i.e., popular, average, neglected, rejected, and controversial) are represented among the population of children you are anticipating will be enrolled. How would you help all of these children have the best possible growth experience in your day care facility? How would you assist them in developing a healthy sense of self-esteem, altruism, and a solid foundation for moral development?
