Marissa is 12 years old, and she has already begun puberty. She is much taller than her classmates, and she has well-developed breasts and other secondary sex characteristics. Marissa is embarrassed about the sudden physical changes in her body, and she feels very insecure. Moreover, Marissa, who has always done very well in school, is learning very quickly that the "brains" in school are not very popular. What factors may be contributing to Marissa's struggles? What can family members and teachers do to support adolescent girls during the early stages of development?

What can they do to support the depressed/suicidal adolescent?

Shelley's mother is Euro-American, and her father is Japanese. Many people who do not know her have a hard time identifying her ethnic background, and she is constantly asked, "What are you?" There are a couple of other students of color at her school, although few of them openly identify as biracial or multiracial. Shelley is now in the process of figuring out who she is. What are some of the challenges biracial or multiracial adolescents face? How might the process of identity development progress?
