The Science of Development

Essay Quiz

1

One of your good friends works at a day care center and, knowing you are taking a class in child development, he has asked you to talk to the parents about the types of behaviors they might expect from their children as they develop. He told you the parents have many questions and concerns about Sigmund Freud's theories and his emphasis on sexuality, but they have heard good things about Jean Piaget's theories. Your friend has also recently learned about the Russian educator, Lev Vygotsky, and would like you to cover all three of these, plus any others you think are important. How would you inform these parents about these theories and what they can expect from their children?
2

Your roommate's mother works at a Youth Center that offers after-school activities for school-aged children (kindergarten through 12th grade). She has noticed that while some older children have been teasing the younger children, other older children have been quite nurturing. She asks you to come to the center to assess the situation, then to design some type of intervention so children of all ages would have mutually beneficial experiences. What research methods would you employ to accomplish these goals?
3

Before taking this class, you may not have paid much attention to the great diversity among children. Now that you are more aware, you feel compelled to look at the many ways in which children differ from each other and the types of research methods that can be used to gather meaningful information about child development. What areas of diversity would you address, and what methods would be helpful in your quest? Be sure to look at the benefits and drawbacks of each method you discuss.
