Design Matching Exercise

Read the research scenario and match it to the appropriate design.

1

Researchers examined the effects of a subliminal message on statistics exam scores. Participants were randomly assigned to either listen to music with or without a stress-reducing subliminal message during the statistics exam.

2

Participants were recruited to participate in a depth perception study. Participants were asked to align two metal rods first with their left eye covered and then their right eye covered. The difference between the two rods was recorded.

3

Researchers want to see if a new teaching technique would help first-graders learn to spell. Based a spelling pretest, matched pairs of students were formed and members of each pair were randomly assigned to either the new or old teaching technique. At the end of the class period, students were given a spelling test and their scores recorded.

4

Researchers examined emotional intelligence development. Children 2, 4, 6, and 8 years old were recruited to participate in the study. Each child’s emotional intelligence was measured and compared every six months during a five-year period.

5

A psychologist wanted to see if there were differences in the capacity of short-term memory between children 5, 6, 7, and 8 years old. Children were given a short-term memory task and the number of digits they correctly recalled was recorded.
