L. Ted Nelson, Portland State University

What's New

The Activity Book includes a newly designed manipulative kit whose shapes are now perforated in colored cardstock so students may avoid the tedium of cutting the shapes with scissors. In addition, the book has been supplemented by the following newly developed electronic tools and interactives on the Online Learning Center.

Digital Manipulative Kit. A new, digitally interactive version of the Bennett/Nelson manipulative kit will be provided on the Bennett/Nelson Online Learning Center. It may be used to carry out the same activities as can the printed manipulative kit.
Writing in Mathematics. Correlated directly to each of the 34 sections of the text, these exercises raise classroom teaching issues and require explanations of mathematical concepts.
Eleven Chapter Level Interactive Mathematics Applets. Eleven brand-new interactive mathematics applets are provided to demonstrate challenging, but ultimately fun mathematical concepts. Interactivities include: Tower of Hanoi, Deciphering Ancient Numeration Systems, Analyzing of Star Polygons, Taking a Chance, Competing at Place Value, Building Bell-Shaped Distributions, Door Prizes, Cross Sections, Filling 3-D Shapes, and Creating Escher-type Tesselations.
Math Investigator. The Math Investigator software that accompanies and illustrates many of the Math Investigations available on the Bennett/Nelson Online Learning Center has been updated with a new design for Web-based platforms to demonstrate the same popular operations it did for previous editions.
Calculator Tutorial. Graphing calculator instruction for those professors who would like to incorporate such material into their work with future elementary teachers.
Sketchpad Tutorial. Sketchpad instruction for those professors who would like to incorporate such material into their work with future elementary teachers.
Spreadsheets Tutorial. Spreadsheet instruction for those professors who would like to incorporate such material into their work with future elementary teachers.
