1. If you want to find out whether certain words are commonly used, you can launch a word search. To describe one group of Americans, some people prefer the word Hispanic, while others prefer Latino. To find which is more popular today, use a search engine to examine frequency of use. Write down the number of "hits" for each word. Which is more frequently used?

Possible Strategy: Go to Google (www.google.com) and enter "Hispanic" for one search, "Latino" for the other.

2. If you retrieve a document that contains a word for which you are searching, it is time consuming to scan the pages with your eyes, looking for the word. A quicker method is to use the Find command (Control + F), which will take you immediately to the word. To examine how the word invidious is being used in contemporary English, find and print a document containing the word.

Possible Strategy: Go to any search engine, such as AltaVista (www.altavista.com), and search for "invidious." Select a document from the results list. When you arrive at the document, press the Control key and F simultaneously, and execute a search for "invidious." You should zip straight to it.
