Chapter 1: Basic Concepts

1.1 Provides definitions of the basic terms of deductive logic: valid, invalid, sound, and unsound.

1.2 Introduces the notion of an argument form and explains how counterexamples can be used to show that a form is invalid.

1.3 Introduces a set of "famous" argument forms: modus ponens, modus tollens, hypothetical syllogism, disjunctive syllogism, and constructive dilemma. Two common formal fallacies are also introduced, namely, affirming the consequent and denying the antecedent.

1.4 Provides definitions of the basic terms of inductive logic: strong, weak, cogent, and uncogent.
