In what ways might the infant's major reflexes--the rooting, sucking, gagging, and Babinski reflexes--have had survival value, from an evolutionary perspective? Does the infant's ability to mimic the facial expressions of adults have a similar value?
  • Rooting: locating the mother's nipple for feeding.
  • Sucking: taking in food.
  • Gagging: rescuing self from choking.
  • Babinski: more speculative; perhaps recoiling from inquisitive predators.
  • Mimic facial expressions: encourages bonding and nurturance

Do you think the widespread use of IQ testing in the United States contributes to parents' views that their children's academic success is largely due to their children's innate intelligence? Why? Would it be possible (or desirable) to change this view?
