Fungi That Affect Human Health

Chapter Concepts

1. Like plants, fungi produce a large number of secondary products, and some have been put to use as medicinal compounds.

2. Some fungal metabolites are toxic to humans and other animals; these include mycotoxins and mushroom toxins, both of which can cause serious or fatal reactions.

3. Some fungi affect humans directly by causing allergic reactions, as well as diseases ranging from mild skin conditions to fatal systemic infections.
