1. Gregor Mendel, an Austrian monk, discovered the basic principles of inheritance in the 1860s.

2. Mendelian genetics explains the inheritance of genes that are located on separate chromosomes, but other patterns of inheritance occur that are not governed by Mendel’s principles.
