How important is having good social skills? What if an individual is uncomfortable in numerous social situations -- is this cause for concern? How do people usually react upon meeting someone who shies away from most social interaction? Is this fair? What factors or experiences might lead someone to dislike engaging in social interactions? Check out your own level of social comfort by taking the Social Anxiety Test at www.queendom.com/tests/health/social_anxiety_r_access.html. Any surprises?

2

Think if you have ever experienced either or both of the following situations:

  • You were someplace where an individual needed help in some way and you volunteered to do something.
  • You were someplace where an individual needed help in some way and you chose not to do anything.
What factors contributed to your decisions? How did you feel about it at the time? Afterwards? Would you do anything different if it happened to you today? Compare your experience and your thinking to what you find at www.usi.edu/libarts/socio/SOCPSY/helping.htm.
