A reporter whose journalism is respected in the community and the profession also works effectively on her own time as an advocate for the homeless. She serves on the boards of directors of two organizations that seek to help people get off the streets and into homes of their own. In this capacity, the reporter serves alongside politicians she regularly covers for her newspaper. The boards of directors lobby the city, county and state governments on behalf of the homeless and spend tax dollars that these governments appropriate for their projects. The reporter says she is doing important work to lift people out of poverty. She sees nothing wrong in these activities that diminish her professional effectiveness; to the contrary, she states that her involvement in the community provides her with insights that she otherwise would not have. Do you see any conflicts in what she is doing?
