Prepare a short class presentation on the life and music of this musician. In your presentation remember to mention that Wynton Marsalis is a renowned classical music trumpeter — how does this influence his jazz side? Was there ever a time in classical music when a musician's skills at improvisation were highly valued?

There exist today more jazz genres like smooth jazz and acid jazz. Find some examples of each and discuss in what ways this music can be considered jazz. What elements does it retain and what elements have been removed?

In "Reading Jazz: A Gathering of Autobiography, Reportage, and Criticism from 1919 to Now" (edited by Robert Gottlieb, Pantheon Books, 1996) read the interview with Anthony Braxton (pp. 325-335). Using the listening example from the text, write a paper tracing Braxton's influences and how they may appear in his substantial work.
