collective improvisation  Simultaneous improvisation by some or all members of a combo.
free jazz  A style of free improvisation introduced by Ornette Coleman in 1960.
third stream  A term coined by Gunther Schuller referring to the combination, but not the blending, of jazz and classical music. Today the term is loosely used in reference to avant-garde jazz styles.
jazz-rock, fusion, jazz-rock-fusion  A jazz style melding rock rhythms and the use of electronic instruments with collective improvisation, extreme ranges of volume, and rapid shifts in meter, tempo, and mood.
