Choose one Latin style from among those discussed in chapter 15 (tango, bomba, rumba, mambo, etc.) and listen to several recorded examples, preferably from a wide range of artists. What are the essential musical features of the style? How would you be able to distinguish this style of Latin music from others you might hear?

Using several different Afro-Cuban recordings, try clapping the clave rhythm (found on p. 256 or your textbook) along with the recording (3-2 clave). Try reversing the rhythm, playing the second notated measure first instead (2-3 clave). Which clave rhythm seems to fit better?

Do some research on the Argentinean tango and the music of Astor Piazzola. What was Piazzola's contribution to the music? You may want to watch a few of the films suggested in your chapter to get a feel for the American response to tango music: why is this music associated with sexual desire?
