1
Listen to any opera mentioned in chapter 20, and identify which sections qualify as aria, recitative, chorus, or solo ensembles. What seem to be the dramatic functions of each?
2
Compare an operatic recording of Gershwin's Porgy and Bess with a jazz version or adaptation (by Miles Davis and Gil Evans, Bill Potts, or Duke Ellington/Russ Garcia). Discuss the features (musical style, order of pieces, melody, harmony, instrumentation, etc.) that have been changed or retained. How do they affect the piece musically and dramatically?
3
Compare the operatic approaches of "minimalist" composers Philip Glass and John Adams. In what ways (musical or dramatic) does each composer realize his subject? Which do you think would be more popular or effective on the stage? On a recording?
