Emerson Lake and Palmer also made an arrangement of "Hoedown" (from Aaron Copland's "Rodeo"). Compare their arrangement with the original. Which version to you find more appealing? Which version seems more "authentic"? Discuss your reasons for your answer.
3
The rich period of the 1920s and 1930s is discussed in Carol Oja's brilliant book "Making Music Modern" (Oxford Univ. Press, 2002). Read further about the Copland/Session's concerts and write a paper discussing the importance of this concert series programs.

Hearing the music of Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring in conjunction with the dance made for it by Martha Graham makes a powerful impression. The dance appears on the video "Martha Graham: An American Original In Performance" (Kultur Video Co.). After watching the dance, discuss how Graham's dance responds to Copland's music. Is there any particular mood or feeling which is more enhanced by the dance? Why do you think so?
