1
After listening to a few pieces by Aaron Copland, compare the sound of Copland's music to the score for a movie like City Slickers (or a similar modern "cowboy" film). Have any musical techniques been borrowed from Copland?
2
Compare Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue to Duke Ellington's "piano concerto" New World A-Comin'. How do the two approaches differ? How might Ellington's piece be characteristic of the Harlem Renaissance?
3
Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings has appeared in at least ten films. Watch a few of these (such as Platoon, Lorenzo's Oil, and The Scarlet Letter) and compare the way the piece is used dramatically. Does the piece evoke the same effect in each film? Why or why not?
