tape music  Electronically generated sounds that have been recorded on tape and manipulated to create a music composition.
electronic synthesizer  An electronic sound generator capable of producing, imitating, and altering sounds.
oscillators  The means by which pitch is determined on an electronic synthesizer.
fingerboard  A board on the synthesizer, uninterrupted by keys or frets, allowing a player to slide through a continuum of pitches.
filters  On a synthesizer, electronic instruments that filter high and low pitches from a wide band of sound to produce a narrow band of melody.
total serialism  Also called serialization or serial technique. Application of twelve-tone concepts to other aspects of a composition (timbres or durations, for example), which, like tones, may be arranged into series and repeated.
aleatory music  Sometimes referred to as chance or indeterminate music, aleatory music leaves significant decisions to the performer of a composition, or to chance. An extreme example of aleatory music may be called random music.
theater score  A concert piece that includes visual and dramatic elements as well as music.
