1
Read Harry Partch's Genesis of a Music, especially the preface and "Part One: Corporeal versus Abstract Music." What seems to be the overall idea or concept behind Partch's music? How does he situate his own work within music history?
2
Stage a performance of John Cage's 4'33" in front of a small audience, making sure at least a few of them have never heard of the piece. Make notes afterward about your experience. What did you hear? What sorts of things went through your mind during the performance? Compare your experience with that of an unsuspecting audience member.
3
Compare some of John Cage's "chance" music for piano with some highly structured piano music, such as Pierre Boulez's Structures I. How would you compare the sound of the two pieces? Is the amount of formal structure in the piece audible?
